2014 GDR III Photos

After months of procrastination I've finally pulled together a slide show from my trip. I've broken the video into a four sections, each of which is arranged chronologically. I decided not to clutter the video with captions so a little explanation is in order.

Shots from the Road

The bulk of the photos are in the first section. With a few exceptions they are of me, my bike or the road ahead (perhaps behind). There are only a couple of “scenery” shots but otherwise most of these photos contain a road if you look hard enough - not just any road, my road. When it looks rough and rocky, it’s a road. When it looks like a riverbed, it’s a road. When it extends out to the horizon it’s a road. There are a couple of shots which are hard to recognize for what they are such as avalanche debris fields in northern Montana which completely buried the road.

I shot all of the photos with the exception of two days: day one when Ted - who gave me a ride down to the border - was driving ahead of me and shooting while I passed; and day 14 when I ran into another rider south of Como Colorado who was being followed by a sag wagon and camera crew. We rode together for a few hours into a fierce headwind and a threatening storm.

One of the hardest things to convey is the distance across these expanses, the photos don’t do justice to the scale of the landscape. It’s a big challenge to look down one of these roads extending out to the horizon knowing that it will take hours to ride to the highpoint only to be presented with another similar scene on the other side.

Shots of Signs

The second section is shots of signs (as opposed to shooting signs which seems to be quite popular) - first divide crossings, then passes, then some other random road signs. I hoped to have photos of more of the passes but many that had signs in 2010 no longer have them.

Water

Many of these are from New Mexico where the water was hard to come by and sometimes very poor quality. As I got further north and water got easier to come by I didn’t take as many photos.

Camp Sites

I didn’t realize how many of these I took until I put them all together. I’m now wishing that I had gotten a shot of every camp site. I was in my tent 29 nights out of the 41 I was on the Divide, I only got photos of about half of my camp sites.
